BPI Delineation of Roles/Responsibilities – Examples
Example #1, below, illustrates for each process step the potential roles and responsibilities assigned for each key position in the research grant decision-making and delivery process at a public sector agency. The question mark highlighted for senior management those tasks that could reasonably be accomplished by employees at varying levels of skills (and salary). Resolution of these issues required that management change its expectations (and internal policies) with regards to the level of scrutiny/expertise afforded each task.
Example #2 provides a more detailed approach to delineating roles and responsibilities. In this example of a large Human Resources unit (comprised of two key occupational categories), accountability for performing the required HR-related workload is allocated between the HR transaction-oriented generalists, HR specialists and line managers themselves.
